Angels at work at disability centre

Zululand Angels bring blessings to Sihawekele Disability Centre

WHILE many teenagers sleep in, listen to music and hang out at the beach over weekends, a handful of young people are working tirelessly to raise funds in aid of vulnerable people.

The youth organisation, AIDe African Angels (AAA) Network, recently procured two large donations for the extension, upgrading and daily running of the Nkosi Sihawukele Disability Centre.

The centre, founded by Nomusa Mbatha, houses 15 mentally and physically disabled children between the ages of three and 18 in a former tribal court building.

Following an article in the Zululand Observer about Nomusa’s fight to keep the children despite her less than ideal circumstances, the AAA, also known as the Zululand Angels, launched two fund-raising initiatives to improve their quality of life.

Mr Gopal Bissessur, Managing Director of AQUA Tap, visited the centre with the angels and was touched by the plight of the children and the dedication of their caregivers.

He pledged thousands of rands to upgrade the existing structure at Nseleni, which will include the building of an internal bathroom and an extension of the crammed facility.

The children are currently carried to an outside building where they have to be washed in a bucket.

Additionally, the courtroom does not have a ramp to accommodate the use of the wheelchairs, which is cumbersome to caregivers who must carry the wheelchairs up and down.

Mr Bissessur will also be sponsoring a stove, TV, blankets and tracksuits to make life a little easier.

He challenged other businesses to also provide support
‘When you are privileged, greed should not overcome compassion, which is the problem with businessmen today.’

He praised the Zululand Angels and their dedication to their cause.

The Angels further donated R60 000 worth of food, water and toiletries to the centre, which was sponsored by their outreach partner, Gift of the Givers.

‘Today’s youth, who are very privileged, have inherited a culture of entitlement and boast all creature comforts provided generously by their parents,’ said Angel Network’s founder Xander Naicker.

‘I urge this group of fortunate youths to participate in our programmes and join the movement to help make a difference.’
