EARTHWORKS are well established for the construction of a new two-lane bridge over the Mzingazi Canal.
This forms part of the R45-million upgrade of Medway Road, linking the harbour’s eastern gate and Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) to the John Ross Parkway.
A coffer dam is being built to allow for the laying of the foundations for the new road bridge, a major portion of the project to build a new double carriageway.
This will then give four-lane access to vehicles entering and leaving the port or RBIDZ, and will see two free right turn lanes into Medway from John Ross and two lanes exiting Medway onto John Ross Parkway.
While the new double carriageway is under construction, traffic continues to drive on the existing road.
Once that is done, all traffic will move onto the new road while the existing Medway Road layer works are strengthened and resurfaced.
Construction began in April and the work should be completed by the end of the first quarter next year.
