Couple escape CBD road trap and robbery

Beware of criminals barricading roads after dark in the Richards Bay CBD

A RICHARDS BAY couple narrowly escaped a robbery and serious harm by plunging through a barricade of branches, stones and shopping trolleys in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Richards Bay CBD.

Mpilo Mkhize of eSikhaleni, says he has no doubt they would have been robbed and injured or worse, if they dared to stop.

‘I fetched up my wife from church on Saturday morning at about 4am and offered to take three church members back home to eNseleni .

‘Passing the Richards Bay taxi rank, opposite Town Square, I almost collided with a barrier of branches, bricks and shopping trolleys, stacked across the road.

‘I managed to avoid an accident by swerving onto the shoulder of the road.’

Rattled by the incident, the couple dropped off their passengers at eNseleni before returning to go home.

This time, at the same place, the road was fully barricaded, also closing off the shoulder and there were people waiting.

‘I knew if I slowed or stopped we would be in serious trouble, so I pushed the peddle down and shot through, driving straight to the police station.

‘The police accompanied me back to place where the barricade was, but when we got there, the trolleys had been removed and only the branches remained.

‘The police drove behind me, so as we approached, we saw people still standing around.

‘They ran up to the vehicle, obviously with malicious intent, but spotted the police vehicle and bolted.

‘The area is in the vicinity of the informal mechanics and is a well known hang-out for drug dealers and addicts.

‘I want to warn people not to travel alone after dark.

‘We escaped unharmed and my car fortunately only had minimal damage, but other people might not be so lucky.’
