To support the efforts of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to deliver a free, fair and credible local government elections, Gigaba said the Department of Home Affairs have made arrangements to ensure services are extended beyond the normal working hours to assist people obtaining ID books and Smart Cards, as well as temporary identity certificates.

Offices will be open on the following days:

Saturday, 30 July from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday, 1 August and Tuesday, 2 August from 8.30am to 6pm, and Wednesday, 3 August from 7am to 5pm.

People who have applied for ID
books and Smart ID Cards are requested to collect them from Home Affairs offices
where they submitted their applications.

By the end of June there were 44 680 green ID books, 68 669 Smart ID Cards and 168 950 re-issue Smart Cards lying uncollected at Home Affair offices countrywide.

The department has been lenient about uncollected documents in view of the upcoming elections, but after 3 August the policy of destroying ID documents not collected for more than a year will be implemented.

This is done to protect society against potential fraudulent activity.
