Juventus claims soccer crown

The finals saw eShowe Juventus beating uMfolozi Real Mates 2-0 to claim the bragging rights for 2016.

AFTER a long off-season, 14 local U21 soccer teams competed in the inaugural July pre-season tournament sponsored by Absa, SAFA and Standard Bank at the Empangeni High School on Saturday.

The purpose of the event was to prepare teams for the new season which kicks off in the second week of August and for players to get scouted for bigger teams.

Former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker and Orlando Pirates player Siyabonga Sangweni attended the tournament.

Teams competed in a round robin format before qualifying for the play-offs.

Peacemakers finished third on the day and picked up a cheque of R4 000 for their efforts.

The finals saw eShowe Juventus beating uMfolozi Real Mates 2-0 to claim the bragging rights for 2016.

Juventus were awarded R11 000 prize money, with Real Mates earning R6 000.

Organisers were pleased with how things ran and are already out looking to secure more sponsorship’s for next year’s tournament.
