Paws-A-While…and think of the animals

Fund-raising initiatives and the Paws-A-While shop have done the SPCA proud once again, ensuring the society remains mobile in its fight against animal cruelty.

IT has been a busy year for the Empangeni SPCA, who have managed to keep operations afloat for another year.

At last week’s annual general meeting it emerged that fund-raising initiatives and the Paws-A-While shop have done the SPCA proud once again, ensuring the society remains mobile in its fight against animal cruelty.

Cheryl Whittaker, who took over as acting Chairperson of the SPCA in March this year, praised staff for their ongoing dedication and hard work.

‘The Paws-A-While charity shop at Five Ways Mall has been our saving grace, and through the generous support of our community we have been able to keep it well stocked,’ she said.

‘In July we welcomed a new kennel manager, Debbie Cross, who came to us from the eShowe SPCA.’

The SPCA handled 1 228 dogs and 736 cats last year, as well as several incidents where livestock was involved.

‘On a negative note, we are finding more frequently that we have to deal with cruelty cases further north in the province, as there are no animal welfare associations there.

‘The coming year will be challenging as costs are rising continually, especially fuel and medicines and cruelty cases are more prevalent than ever. Funding will now and always be difficult, so we will continue to focus on fund-raising as a priority,’ Whittaker concluded.

Lynne van den Heuvel also delivered her fund-raising report.

‘Economic times and a diminishing support base in our area have made fund-raising efforts more challenging than ever before,’ she said.

‘We are extremely grateful to our remaining supporters and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every single supporter that helped us meet the financial needs of the many animals that pass through our doors.’

The committee was unanimously re-elected: Chairperson – Cheryl Whittaker, Vice Chairperson – Karen Scruby, Secretary/Treasurer – Cheryl Kingon, Fund-raising – Lynne van den Heuvel, Lesley Irvine and Kyle Cowan.
