Ten-year sentence for shebeen killer

Sibiya stabbed a woman in the arm during a quarrel at the shebeen and then stabbed a man in the head before fleeing the scene.

A NIGHT out at a shebeen in Macekane, near Empangeni, ended in disaster when two people were stabbed, one of them fatally.

The Empangeni Magistrate’s Court last week sentenced the attacker, Sifiso Sibiya (30), to 10 years imprisonment for murder, deviating from the 15-year minimum sentence, and a further three years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

In December, Sibiya stabbed a woman in the arm during a quarrel at the shebeen and then stabbed a man in the head – one of three men who tried to intervene – before fleeing the scene.

The victim, 30-year-old Lucky Dlamini, was rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital but he died the following morning.

Following up on leads, police arrested Sibiya in the KwaNongoma area in January.
