Medway Road project moving fast

Construction began in April and the work should be completed by the end of the first quarter next year.

SOLID progress is being made on the R45-million upgrade of Medway Road, linking the harbour’s eastern gate and Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) to the John Ross Parkway.

Construction began in April and the work should be completed by the end of the first quarter next year.

The existing single road will be transformed into a four-lane carriageway.

First priority is to construct the new double carriageway while traffic continues to drive on the existing road.

Once that is done, all traffic will move onto the new road while the existing Medway Road layer works are strengthened and resurfaced.

The major component of the construction is the doubling of the Ngodweni (Mzingazi) Canal bridge to four lanes and upgrade of the main intersection, which will see two free right turn lanes into Medway from John Ross and two lanes exiting Medway onto the John Ross Parkway.

Additional improvements will include a new traffic circle at Medway/RBIDZ Phase 1A entrance; improved access to Green Africa nursery; new street lights along Medway Road; a new pedestrian walkway along Medway Road up to the port entrance; and new bus stops along Medway at the RBIDZ entrance.
