Exposing young women to the working world

The Grade 11 and 12 pupils were exposed to a variety of work and career options

HEEDING Cell C’s call for the advancement of women, Pongola Municipality recently hosted a ‘take a girl child to work’ campaign where more than 50 Grade 11 and 12 female pupils from various schools around Pongola were, for a day, exposed to life beyond school.
After a briefing at the Pongola municipal council chambers, the girls were allocated to different companies and departments and given an idea of what a general work day entails.
‘Together we are helping girls dream, believe and achieve’ was this year’s theme, and campaign hosts were impressed with the variety of careers the pupils had in mind.
Pongola municipal speaker, Cllr HV Ngcamphalala, motivated the pupils and reminded them to work hard towards their goals.
Also present was Municipal Manager, MN Ndlela, who also encouraged the pupils to work towards goals.
‘Young women need to know what is available to them, that their dreams can be as big as they want them to be.’
He also urged the girls to stay away from social media and devote more time to their studies.
The schools that participated in the campaign included Khulumeluzulu, Masiphula, Sqalukubona, Magutshwa, Sebenzakanzima, uMginama and Amanzamhlophe high schools, Pongola Intermediate and Pongola Academy.
