Robbers hit pension pay point

Gunmen snatch R1.5-million from senior citizens in KwaMbonambi

THERE was no law and order outside the Sokhulu Tribal Court on Wednesday where around 20 brazen armed robbers hit the rural pensioner’s pay point.
Complainant Sibongiseni Mselethse told the KwaMbonambi SAPS he was busy paying out pension funds totalling a whopping R1.5-million to senior citizens in the Goyintethe Reserve when he suddenly noticed people running away.
He then saw a group of men wielding rifles shout instructions for everyone to lie down on the ground.
The perpetrators disarmed four security officials, took their cellphones and grabbed all of the cash before absconding.
‘One of the security guards was assaulted during the robbery and was taken to Ngwelezane Hospital for medical treatment,’ said KwaMbonambi SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Nkosingiphile Mthethwa.
Police later found two vehicles abandoned in the Mandlazini area, a black BMW with Pietermaritzburg registration NP194179 and a silver Ford Fiesta with registration number NP49464.
‘An armed robbery case was opened with the KwaMbonambi police, which has been transferred to the Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit for further investigation,’ said Mthethwa.
Members of the police are still scouring Zululand for the suspects.
No arrests have yet been made.
