KwaZulu-Natal Premier ousted

The party could not confirm if Mchunu would be redeployed at a national level

THE KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu, has confirmed his resignation from office.

His resignation letter (see below) emerged late on Monday following a meeting held last Friday with the ANC’s provincial leadership.

It is believed he had been under pressure to resign from the ANC’s provincial executive committee, and that six accusations, the nature of which are unclear, were levelled against him at Friday’s meeting.

‘It is true that last Friday morning we held a meeting at the Provincial office with the leadership at their request,’ said Mchunu.

‘All statements made so far about my reaction to what was discussed at that meeting are not true.’

Provincial ANC reaffirmed the move at an emergency press briefing on Monday night, where it also emerged that MEC for the Department of Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison in KZN, Willies Mchunu, would replace him as premier until the end of the term of office.

The party said it had ‘met with comrade Mchunu on Friday to convey the decision of the movement, which he accepted with a great sense of humility’.

‘We also wish him well in what will be his new responsibilities subsequent to his resignation from the position of the premier,’ the ANC announced.

Mchunu said prior to resigning he consulted ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, who confirmed the importance of a provincial cabinet reshuffle and the option of being redeployed.

Media reports claimed the futures of other MECs, including Mike Mabuyakhulu (economic development), Peggy Nkonyeni (education), Cyril Xaba (agriculture) and Ntombi Sibhidla-Sapetha (arts and culture) are also uncertain.

Provincial Secretary Super Zuma said they would not comment any further on the matter.
