Firearm possession backfires

The magistrate opted for the sentences to not run concurrently, putting him behind bars for the full five years.

THE strong arm of the law has permanently disarmed a man charged with possession of an illegal firearm.

Sbonelo Hlabisa, was arrested by police in August 2015 after being found in possession of an unregistered 9mm calibre pistol and six rounds of live ammunition.

The 22-year-old from Odondolo has no previous convictions; however, the Empangeni Magistrates Court last Wednesday sentenced him to three years for possession of the firearm, and a further two years for possession of the ammunition.

The magistrate opted for the sentences to not run concurrently, putting him behind bars for the full five years.
