AN ongoing water leak on Turnbull Street, Empangeni, has left farmers up in arms at uMhlathuze municipality’s lack of service delivery.
The leak has been reported five times, the last being on Thursday.
It is believed the leaking fitting serves as an attachment that a fire-fighting hose would fit onto.
During municipal inspection, the complainants were informed that the type of fitting was no longer in use, and the municipality would have to procure a new one in order to repair the leak.
However, four months later, the leak still flows steadily.
Residents measured the flow of water and found that the leak could fill a 20-litre bucket in just under half-an-hour
The leak coincidentally occurred in front of the Sugar House offices at Mimosa Court, a building owned by farmers in the region, and home to Felixton Planters, Felixton Canegrowers, Felixton Mill Group Board, Felixton Grower Consortium and SA Canegrower members.
As the region undergoes serious drought conditions and farmers desperately seek financial assistance, visiting farmers are left shocked by the massive wastage, yet cannot act as the fitting is municipal property.
