UPDATE: Campus bomb threat was emergency drill

The University of Zululand denies claims of a bomb threat in KwaDlangezwa last Wednesday

THE ‘bomb threat’ which resulted in chaotic reaction at the University of Zululand’s KwaDlangezwa campus last Wednesday, turned out to be a standard police emergency drill.

The practice run was conducted to ensure the university has reactive measures in place and to monitor officials response in case of an emergency.

The safety alarm went off in the administration building and Bhekuzulu Hall at 9:30am.

None of the lecturers and students were notified, and the exercise caused panic within the institution.

It was later revealed the run was a random emergency check.

According to Unizulu Communications and Media Coordinator Terry Stallard, academic activities were not interrupted.

‘Only the admin department closed whilst a SAPS surprise security check occurred. Business resumed as per normal once the check was complete,’ she said.

On a separate issue, the university also refuted claims that a memorandum had been issued to top management regarding students’ issues.

‘The University has a set procedure for students to deliver memorandums. The Students Representative Council (SRC) is the official student representative body who engage with the Dean of Students.

‘Memorandums are responded to by the university management when issued via the Dean of Students.

‘A small group of Economic Freedom Fighters students did not follow this procedure and grouped in a march to the admin building to hand over a list of concerns.

‘The matter is being dealt with internally.’
