Mondi Schools race proves popular

Arboretum bag top prize at school run

 

ARBORETUM Primary School walked away with R21 000 for the most entries at the popular annual Mondi Schools fun run at the Bay Hall on Sunday.

The local primary school entered 1 269 participants into the event hosted by the Nashua Richards Bay Athletics Club.

Richards Bay Primary School ended in second spot with 602 entries and picked up a cheque of R17 000, with Bay Primary ending in third with 499 entries and collecting a cheque of R15 000.

All schools told the Zululand Observer the money will be pumped back into the school for various projects that will benefit the children.

Mondi also handed over a cheque of R25 000 to uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo in support of the Back to School campaign.

Empangeni were awarded the Best Spirited School award after making their voices heard all along the 5km route.

In all, 4 500 participants of all ages completed the 5km route.

Tholokuhle High School’s Thulani Mdletshe crossed the finish line first in an impressive time of 15.07.07, followed by school mate Musi Zulu in second spot with a time of 15.15.58.

Siyabonga Guvala from Welabasha High School crossed the line third with a time of 16.08.07.

In the girls section, Richards Bay High School claimed one and two, when Michela Schultz (32.00.09) and Bianca du Plessis (32.05.28) crossed the line.

Mabhodla High School’s Xolani Nxumalo finished third in a time of 32.05.58.
