iSithebe strike threat fizzles out

More strike action promised by the CEPPWAWU union has failed to metrialise

ALL is calm in iSithebe near Mandeni following a harrowing week of violent protests earlier this month.

The Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) has sent a letter to one local business, threatening strike action on Tuesday, but this failed to materialise.

According to the letter, CEPPWAWU was unhappy with certain issues and gave the company 48 hours to resolve the disputes.

The letter stated the union wanted labour brokers to employ permanent staff, a 17% night allowance and 100% bonuses across the board.

The company in question confirmed on Wednesday that the matter was being attended to by attorneys and would be handled by the Labour Courts.

Protesters caused millions of Rands of damage to a number of factories and vehicles when community leaders failed to resolve issues surrounding a returning ANC mayoral candidate.
