Half marathon entries now open

Runners and walkers can participate in a variety of distances

THE annual iSimangaliso St Lucia half marathon is just around the corner and entries are now open to all those wanting to participate – from novices looking to improve their fitness to those using the event as a pre-Comrades training session.

This year’s event will be held on 15 May and the usual options – 21.1km, 10km and 5km run or walk – are available.

The event is a sanctioned by KZN Athletics and race management is conducted by the Zululand Multi Sports Club.

Starting and finishing outside the St Lucia Ski Boat Club, the race takes runners along the edges of the St Lucia estuary, through the iGwalagwala Trail, along Beach Road and finishing off on the St Lucia estuary boardwalk.

As with last year’s event, there is a strong focus on youth participation and pupils from schools around the park will once again be able to participate as part of the Umfolozi Sugar Mill (USM) sponsorship. The pupils will have the opportunity to win environmental education trips to the park.

‘The event encourages participants to stay in the area for longer and to experience the beautiful iSimangaliso Wetland Park and its offerings. We look forward to welcoming all the athletes to our World Heritage Site,’ said iSimangaliso Marketing and Brand Manager, Lindy Duffield.

Runners can enter online at www.isimangaliso.com or by telephoning the office on 035 590 1633.

Entry forms are available at the iSimangaliso office and at the venue on the day of the event.

The half marathon forms part of iSimangaliso’s Eco Series and 30% of each entry fee will be donated to the Rare and Endangered Species Fund. This fund aids conservation efforts of endangered species in the park, including wild dogs, oribi and rhino.
