Major upgrade for Empangeni taxi rank

Upgrade on the cards for the Empangeni taxi rank, lot 63

TAXI rank Lot 63, the biggest and busiest rank in Empangeni, is set for a major facelift.

The facility situated between Shoprite Centre and Power Spar is a major gateway to a cluster of townships such as eSikhaleni, eNseleni and Ngwelezana.

Construction will include new shelters and an increase of parking areas, which will improve access control of vehicles and pedestrians.

According to the uMhlathuze Municipality, the project will start in May and be completed by December.

‘A combination of factors such as overcrowding, vehicle congestion and street trading have outgrown the rank’s capacity,’ said Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane

‘About four years ago the Council resolved to turn the situation around,’ .

Hawkers, who currently sell their good from makeshift stalls will also benefit, and more lights will be installed to make the area safer.

‘For a very long time Council generally did not do much in terms of of periodic inspection and upkeep of its public transport facilities. This unfortunately contributed to deterioration and the inability to detect expansion needs,’ he said.

Ncalane added the refurbishment will add value to the surroundings.

‘Commuters will be serviced in a more dignified environment. After its completion, there will be order and environmental health issues will have been improved. There will be relief of congestion which will decrease risks and dangers.’
