Online dating fraudster scams Richards Bay woman

Police warn against online dating con artists

A RICHARDS Bay woman has lost R150 000 to an online dating scam, according to the Richards Bay SAPS.

The 55-year-old thought she had fallen in love with a prospective partner, which she met on a dating site but instead was scammed out of her cash.

The fraudster told the woman he needed the money to come and visit her but she later found that he was an online dating con-artist.

Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira has warned members of the public to be aware of internet and online dating scams.

‘Scammers take advantage of people looking for romantic partners, often via dating websites, apps or social media by pretending to be prospective companions.

‘They play on emotional triggers to get you to provide money, gifts or personal details.

‘Not everyone on Internet dating sites is looking for love; some may be hoping to scam their next potential victim.

‘Common warning signs to look for is bad grammar, people posing as professionals working overseas and creating stories to elicit money.

‘If they ask you for money or offer to send you large sums this should raise a red flag.

‘Don’t give people you meet online your personal email address, work email address, or home or work address or phone number, stick with a cellphone number so you can block it if you need to,’ said Ferreira.
