Pupils escape school bus fire

The cause of the fire is unknown.

A BUS transporting five school pupils caught on fire in the Nkosi ST Zulu traditional area near Ndundulu at around 8.30am on Wednesday.

The bus was nearing the end of its route with only five Stheku High School pupils to be dropped off at their school 3km away.

The driver was alerted to the problem when the pupils complained of smoke.

He brought the bus to a stop and in their haste to escape through the windows, the pupils suffered minor cuts and were later transported to St Mary’s Hospital at KwaMagwaza for treatment.

According to a bystander, the bus was soon engulfed in flames.

Nkosi Zulu also visited the scene to see what had happened first hand.

‘Fortunately the driver took the initiative and reacted fast enough to avoid any major injuries,’ said Mthonjaneni Chief Traffic Officer, Derek Horne.

Despite efforts to douse the flames, the bus was completely burnt out. A bystander at the scene said that the same bus experienced problems on Tuesday, only leaving Stheku High School at around 4.30pm after repairs had been carried out.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
