Twenty arrested residents realeased

All is calm at Port Durnford following the release of 20 arrested community members

TWENTY Port Durnford community members arrested on kidnapping and assault charges, were released from the eSikhaleni police holding cells on Thursday morning.

According to Empangeni Police Cluster spokesperson, Cpt Mbongeni Mdlalose, the group was freed after a brief court appearance at eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court.

‘Once the court has reviewed all the statements relating to the arrests, a way forward will be decided,’ said Mdlalose.

The suspects were apprehended following protests over incomplete road construction on Tuesday.

They blocked roads with rocks, wood and burning materials.

According to Mdlalose police dispersed the crowd, but they later regrouped and started assaulting people they believed to be criminals.

On Wednesday, angry eSikhaleni when residents demanded that their ‘brothers’ be released.

Carrying sticks and knobkerries, the large crowd chanted outside the police station before moving to court.
