Empangeni Home Affairs employee in hot water

Crooked Home Affairs employee behind bars

AN Empangeni Home Affairs employee appeared at Empangeni Magistrates’ Court on Monday for fraud and corruption.

According to uThungulu Home Affairs District Manager: Operations Sikhosephi Dlamini Empangeni, Home Affairs Senior Official Njabulo Chiliza was arrested on 31 December for selling birth certificates to foreigners as well as locals.

It is reported Chiliza sold the documents for amounts ranging between R900-R5000.

Apparently Chiliza has been a mobile Home Affairs van driver, providing rural community members unable to visit Home Affairs offices with an opportunity to access identity documents, birth certificates and other such documentation.

Chiliza first appeared at the Empangeni Magistrates’ Court on 4 January, then again on 11 January, and was released on bail.

Dlamini said, ‘One of his bail conditions was he must not go anywhere near the Empangeni Home Affairs office.

‘Any public servant of ours who involves him or herself in these fraudulent activities, will bear the full brunt of the law.

‘By selling such documents to foreigners, the said employee compromised the security of the country.

‘There is nothing stopping us from taking the necessary disciplinary action against him, especially if he is found guilty; nothing will stop us from firing him,’ Dlamini added.
