Hamper pamper for game rangers

Spar Group gifts Christmas hampers to game rangers

APPRECIATION was expressed in tangible terms when Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Field Staff in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Park received super Christmas hampers last week.

The gifts, courtesy of Spar Group Ltd, were delivered by Honorary Officers from Hluhluwe Hilltop and Imfolozi, who travelled to ranger outposts with the sponsor.

‘The contents, carefully selected by Spar, will bring joy to the families, even if their loved ones are on duty over the festive season,’ said Martin van der Walt, Chairman of the Hluhluwe Hilltop Honorary Officers.

Representing Spar Group at the handover, Claire Hogg and Troy Vernon expressed their support for the foot soldiers in the war against poaching and the many threats to our wildlife heritage.

Speaking at a bush braai after the handover, Regional Co-ordinator Ronnie Henderson thanked Spar for their commitment and close affinity to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi.

The project was initiated four years ago by the Honorary Officers in recognition of the dangers and hardships faced by game rangers as they carry out their duties.

‘In a game reserve with the Big 5, every day can bring some excitement,’ said Van der Walt.

‘Ask the field rangers what they fear most as they do their daily foot patrols and there is little hesitation – Black Rhino, closely followed by buffalo.

‘Elephant? No, except for mothers with young calves and musth bulls.

‘For them, it’s ‘a walk in the Park’, but one that requires commitment and dedication.’
