Christmas ‘card’ security

South Africa is one of the most targeted countries when it comes to online fraudsters trying to steal personal details

AS several stokvels make pay-outs and employees receive bonus payments, it is important to remain constantly cautious.

South Africa is one of the most targeted countries when it comes to online fraudsters trying to steal personal details.

Two of the most common scams are phishing (pronounced ‘fishing’), which are e-mail scams and smishing (sms-scams) – both are a kind of identity theft.

Not all phishing and smishing involves getting your account details or luring you into making a payment.

Some scams only try to get enough information to be able to open a fraudulent store, online shopping or loan account.

Richards Bay Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker said scams are at an all-time high.

‘People are too trusting and gullible and fraudsters are very persistent and tactful.

‘It is important to stand your ground and refuse to speak to them unless you have verified the information with your service provider.

‘Identity theft scams can be more difficult to spot because con men do not seem to be asking for sensitive information, but be suspicious of e-mails asking for details that a company should already have.

‘Be extra suspicious if the request comes from one with which you have never done business.’ Whittaker said.
