uThungulu lose unbeaten status

uThungulu hold on to tight lead at the top of the Castle Premier Cricket League

RH CONSTRUCTION uThungulu lost on Sunday for the first time this season, but retain a tenuous hold at the summit of the Castle Premier Cricket League.

It’s tight at the top, and the tough match expected against fellow title chasers Pinetown duly materialised at Lahee Park.

Batting first, hosts Pinetown amassed 224 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 50 allotted overs.

Ziphozokuthula Zondo (45) and Tyron Koen (59) led the way and with most of the batsmen reaching double figures a formidable target was set, despite the accuracy with the ball of Neil Jordan (10-1-33-4) and Stephan Joubert (10-0-45-2).

uThungulu started well in pursuit of the objective, Stephan Joubert (55) and Simon Savides (18) putting on 45 for the first wicket.

With Jason Redinger (33) and Eugene Zwart (44) taking over, the win was beckoning and at 140/3 things were looking good.

But apart from Trevor Kietzmann (16) and Neil Jordan (12), wickets then fell at a rapid rate and uThungulu slid to 201 all out in 48.2 overs, still 23 runs in arrears.

While certainly not disgraced, uThungulu will know they let this one slip.

But they are still in with a great chance of clinching the league.
