UPDATE: Fourth suspect arrested for cop killing

Police have netted the fourth man suspected to be involved in the robbery that led to the death of an Empangeni policeman.

A FOURTH suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Sergeant Niren ‘Foxy’ Ramsaroop.

Sergeant Ramsaroop was shot in the chest while attempting to apprehend an armed robbery suspect in the Empangeni CBD on Saturday, 14 November.

Police on Friday nabbed the fourth person at a shopping mall in Ngwelezane after receiving information he had been involved in the robbery that led to the death of Sgt Ramsaroop.

Investigators believe there were five men involved in the robbery of three women who had gone to a bank to withdraw just over R100 000 of stokvel money.

After questioning, suspect number four led police to a spot where he had hidden his share of the money and a pump-action shotgun believed to have been used during an armed robbery at Phoenix Cash and Carry earlier this year.

Previous arrests

Henry Thutukani Mbonambi (41), who was also wounded during the struggle, is believed to have fatally shot Sgt Ramsaroop.

Mbonambi appeared in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where his case was postponed until today (Thursday) as his legal representation was not present.

Two more suspects were arrested last Tuesday night and have since appeared in court, with police managing to recover some of the stolen cash during each arrest.

The fifth suspect, believed to have been the getaway driver, is still at large.

Witnesses have reported that a silver/grey newer shape Toyota Corolla was used, but a registration number still eludes investigators.

Officials are working to combine the dockets to ensure all the suspects are prosecuted simultaneously.
