THE policeman who was shot and killed in the Empangeni CBD yesterday morning has been identified as Sergeant Niren Ramsaroop (40).
He was described by fellow police officers as a dedicated policeman who was ‘always at the front lines of crime fighting initiatives’.
Ramsaroop was shot in the chest while apprehending a suspect who, together with another man, had robbed three women at B-rank. The suspect was shot in the leg during the struggle.
The women were carrying a bag containing a reported R110 000 of ‘stokvel’ money.
The 41-year-old injured suspect is currently under police guard.
