Bomb threat at IFP mayor’s re-election

SAPS Bomb Squad called in for Mthonjaneni mayor re-election ceremony.

THE new Mthonjaneni mayor was due to be inaugurated today at a bed & breakfast in Melmoth.

However, minutes ago the lodge received a bomb threat and all guests and councillors have been evacuated.

Yesterday, the IFP said its councillors were nervous ahead of the re-election of a new mayor for the municipality

Two weeks ago council, through a vote of no confidence, removed ANC Mayor Maureen Dlangamandla and elected IFP Councillor Mbangiseni Biyela as the new mayor.

IFP members have claimed intimidation had been rife during the build-up to the re-election.

The SAPS Bomb Squad is en route to Melmoth to assess the situation.
