UPDATE: Murder accused denied bail

The third accused in the murder of a woman suffering with albinism maintains his innocence.

THE third accused in the murder trial of Manguzi resident, Thandazile Mpunzi was refused bail by the court this week.

From the outset, Bhekukufa Gumede claimed innocence and pleaded not guilty while his two co-accused, Lindokuhle Khumalo and Mandla Mabuza, last month pleaded guilty and were each sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

Gumede, once again pleaded not guilty but was refused bail.

The court’s reasons for refusing bail included the possibility of Gumede evading trial and the endangerment of his life at the hands of an outraged community.

The court also heard that the State has built a strong case against Gumede.

‘We strongly welcome the court’s decision as it demonstrates they will not be lenient to suspects that commit such heinous crimes,’ said KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu.

‘As government, our view is that he should remain in custody for his alleged crimes.’

Noting the community’s continued support of the victim, as they picketed against Gumede receiving bail, Mchunu said, ‘The murder and sexual assault of women remains a great concern to us which should be condemned by all.’

Mpunzi (20), who suffered from albinism, was reported missing by her family in August.

Police investigations revealed four suspects who led them to Mpunzi’s mutilated body buried in a shallow grave on the outskirts of Manguzi.

Hundreds of community members last month brought Manguzi to a standstill as they picketed against the release of the suspects.
