UPDATE: Unizulu fire under investigation

It is believed students were unhappy with the new student's committee, elected earlier this month.

POLICE are being deployed at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) KwaDlangezwa campus after two buildings were set alight on Friday morning.

It is believed students were unhappy with the new student’s committee, elected earlier this month.

Furious students told the Zululand Observer, they were ‘fed up’ with the current situation.

They said the newly elected SRC president did not meet the requirements needed to lead the committee.

‘Last year we had the same problem about the student council, and we were left without any student representative.

‘This year, the same is happening because of few individuals,’ said Thabani Mkhize.

Students also took their frustrations to various social networks, and had their say.

‘Why not burn the SRC offices if the problem is with them instead of the dining hall,’ said Dumsani Myeni on the university’s Facebook.

Unizulu Director of Communications and Marketing, Norman Zondo, said the university was investigating the cause of the fire with the assistance of the SAPS forensic team.

‘These fires have caused significant damage to the property of the university and the areas will be closed until the finalisation of the investigation into the cause of the fires and maintenance had been carried out,’ she said.
