Anaesthetist shortage in Zululand

Indaba aimed at sharing skills to alleviate anaesthetist shortage.

AIMED at transferring key skills to alleviate the anaesthetist shortage in the region, Ngwelezana Hospital Anaesthetic Department hosted an indaba in Empangeni.

Clinic Unit Head Dr Selina Sewpersad said skills should no longer be reserved for specialists.

‘We have a shortage of anaesthetists. There are only three anaesthetists in our region catering to a population of 2.8-million,’ Dr Sewpersad said.

‘It is a highly specialised field; therefore the selection process narrows down the number.

‘The shortage of registrar posts adds to the dilemma as well as the general shortage of doctors in our country,

‘We are then left to develop models and not emulate developed health systems as they do not speak to the challenges of our own area.’ said Dr Sewpersad.

Keeping with international standards and as part of the initiative to impart skills, the unit also invited University of KwaZulu Natal medical school students to attend.
