PYA walks Unizulu SRC election

Young Communist League to push for free education.

THE Young Communist League (YCL) in the Riot Makomanisi Mkhwanazi District has welcomed the University of Zululand’s Students Representative Council (SRC) election results, which saw the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) emerging victorious last Monday.

PYA won 9 out of 10 seats.

Addressing a media briefing at their Empangeni’s Offices, the YCL said the victory signalled the beginning of a new era at the ‘troubled university’.

YCL spokesperson Khulezweni Shwala said they were disturbed by some reports that the SRC election was won by the YCL alone.

‘Firstly we want to re emphasize that the election was won by the PYA, which is made up of YCL, ANC Youth League and Sasco students. This was not a YCL victory as was reported in some media.

‘We are clear about the agenda of the PYA, which is to create a climate conducive for effective learning. We care about the struggles of the young people in almost all tertiary institutions,’ he said.

Shwala said they would rally support behind the newly elected SRC, as they believe the student body would push for the implementation of free education.

‘By saying free education, we are not just singing a song. We want an education which is free even in content.

‘We are also concerned about student transformation which is moving at a snail’s pace. We don’t shy away from saying we supported the strike that took place at this university early this year.

‘We will always be biased towards progressive students and we want to see the expansion of student residences,’ he added.
