New roads for Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park almost a reality

Visitors to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park will soon enjoy driving on smooth, pothole-free roads

TOUR guides who visit Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) on a daily basis with their guests are pleased be driving on the new, smooth roads, rather than dodging potholes, some of which once spanned the entire width of the road.

The state of the roads in HiP has caused much uproar in recent years, not least when a contractor abandoned the newly started job earlier this year.

When Merlcon Construction was awarded the tender last year, it quickly became evident the job would not be completed timeously.

In a matter of months, the company abandoned the project, leaving half-gravelled roads and squared-off potholes in its wake.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife put the job out to tender again and made assurances that Merlcon Construction had not been paid for the job.

Dreykon Klus Civils was subsequently awarded the tender and works commenced in May this year.

The duration of the project is eight months, meaning HiP’s roads should be completely resurfaced by mid-January.

The value of the contract is R42-million.
