GALLERY: Jackal pups rescued in Empangeni

Farm workers made a surprising discovery in the sugar cane.

THE swift action and support of community members has resulted in four jackal pups being saved after they were discovered on a farm in Empangeni.

The pups were found in a burrow in the sugar cane and are suspected to be less than 10-days-old.

It is suspected the litter was abandoned after their mother attacked one of the workers collecting cane and never returned to the den.

Unaware of the pups, work continued in the field until a worker operating a loader destroyed the burrow housing the pups. The farm workers then made the surprising find.

After waiting 24 hours for the jackal mother to return, the farm owner consulted Irene Liversage from CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) who recommended taking the pups to the local vet.

Dr Geoff Fourie from Empangeni Veterinary Hospital tube fed the pups before preparing them for the trip to CROW in Durban, where they will be cared for and prepared for release.
