Beach bears brunt of spring tides

Spring tides eat another chunk of coastline.

IT’S back to square one for Alkantstrand’s battered Blue Flag beach as this week’s wind-fuelled spring tides undid all the recent clean-up efforts.

Concreted poles, trees and other debris once again litter the beach after the ocean’s relentless assault on the dune barrier.

Bodyboarders wanting to practice for the upcoming SA Champs were banned from the water on Tuesday morning because of the danger posed by semi-submerged debris.

‘Some of the items in the water have in fact been brought back in by the strong currents and high tides,’ said Beach Manager Shakes Hiraman.

‘It is a miracle we have not had a serious boating or bathing incident.’
