UPDATE: Police investigate Naval Island car fire

Police have opened an inquest docket, and forensic tests will be needed to identify the body

MYSTERY still shrouds the identity of the person that was found dead inside a burnt out car on Naval Island in Richards Bay early on Thursday morning.

According to Captain Debbie Ferreira, spokesperson for Richards Bay SAPS, an inquest docket has been opened.

‘We are investigating the cause of the fire as well as the identity of the deceased,’ she said.

Capt Ferreira confirmed that police were able to get the registration number of the vehicle and are currently trying to confirm who the car belongs to and who was inside it at the time.

Despite the motive being unclear at this stage, police have not ruled out the possibility of foul play.
