Fire threat still a real danger

Fire breaks need to be completed by the end of July.

‘DON’T drop your guard’.

That is the message from Zululand Fire Protection Association’s (ZFPA) Fire Officer Tony Roberts.

Although the rains on Tuesday night may have brought some relief, Roberts remains concerned as the fire risk becomes more dangerous by the day.

He warned that landowners need to check with their local FPA before burning to check the Fire Danger Indices, wind speed and directions, and expected temperatures and humidity.

Fire breaks need to be completed by the end of July.

Of particular concern is the heaps of charcoal, sawdust and poles which are near processing plants..

Spontaneous combustion of these heaps is a major threat, especially where there is not a sufficient fire break around the waste material.

Roberts says this is also a problem where heaps have been abandoned and are now situated in the middle of timber plantation or cane fields.

Since the beginning of the year 312 fires have been logged, caused mainly by honey hunters and arson.

As the dry weather continues, all landowners are asked to be more vigilant when working with fire.
