UPDATE: AmaKhosi attempted murder case postponed

The AmaKhosi arrived at court surrounded by supporters.

TWO AmaKhosi, who have been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder, appeared in the Empangeni Regional Court on Tuesday.

Inkosi Zenzo K Zungu of KwaMadlebe (43) Traditional Council and Inkosi Eric Khoza (60) of uThungulu Traditional Council, who were released on R1000 bail in March, arrived at court surrounded by supporters.

A third accused, taxi driver Nkosinathi Shezi (37), who faces the same charges, was also released on R1000 bail.

The case has been postponed to 28 July, when the defense will make a representation.

The incident dates back to 14 February 2006 when, reportedly, the suspects broke a window of the victims’ home in Mevamhlope near Empangeni, and opened fire.

Fortunately no one was injured and a case of attempted murder was opened.

Both AmaKhosi were granted the return of their firearms in April, despite the State requesting to keep the weapons as evidence for the trial.

The arrests sparked controversy, with KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Nomusa Dube-Ncube reacting with shock.

‘Our primary concern at this point is about the image of the institution of traditional leadership which our department is doing its utmost best to uphold,’ she said in April.

‘We urge the public to await the outcome of the investigation before jumping to conclusions, as they should in every other similar case.’
