Rhino poaching stats just as bad as last year

Last year, 16 rhinos were poached on private reserves.

LATEST rhino poaching statistics show that the number of rhinos killed between 1 January and Sunday, 15 June in KZN, is almost the same as last year’s numbers for the same period.

KZN has lost 49 rhinos compared to 47 over the same period last year.

This year 42 White and seven Black Rhinos were killed compared to 42 White and five Black rhinos last year.

State parks have been hardest hit this year with a total of 41 rhinos being poached in these reserves compared to 31 last year and eight on private land.

Last year, 16 rhinos were poached on private reserves.

The authorities have arrested 25 suspected poachers and have recovered 11 firearms in various operations this year.

Last year, 36 people had been arrested and 24 firearms recovered over the same period.
