Peace maker murdered in parking lot brawl

Fatal knife fights come to life at dawn in Richards Bay CBD.

A MAN was stabbed and clubbed to death in the early hours of Sunday morning in a parking lot in front of Richards Bay nightclub Lion’s Den after reportedly attempting to resolve a brawl between revellers.

The Richards Bay SAPS said the innocent 33-year-old was struck with a knobkierie to the head and knifed to death at around 5am.

Witnesses called the police, who rushed to the site and arrested 10 young men.

On further investigation, four were released.

The remaining six appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder.

Siyanda Bila (20), Sikhumbuzo Dlamini (24), Philani Mkhize (18), Sibonelo Mthethwa (19), Sthembiso Mthethwa (18) and a sixteen-year-old minor whose name may not be revealed, were refused bail.

They remain in the Richards Bay SAPS cells until their next appearance in the Richards Bay Regional Court on 22 June.

Parking lot bloodbaths

Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, said it was not the first time knife fights have been reported at dawn in the CBD area.

In May alone four people were stabbed in the parking lot outside the Keg & Piper, otherwise known as the Piper Bar.

‘All four incidents took place in the early hours of the morning, two of which broke out at 5am,’ said Captain Ferreira.

‘Cases of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm were opened.

‘We urge clubbers to take caution and adhere to the stipulated closing times of bars and clubs – 4am for Lion’s Den and 2am for the Piper Bar – according to its licenses from the liquor board,’ Ferreira said.
