UPDATE: Praise for slain cop

The police fraternity will assemble for W/O Johannes Ngwane's memorial service in eSikhaleni today.

CONDOLENCES are pouring in for the policeman who was brutally murdered inside the eSikhawini police holding cells on Friday.

Colleagues will assemble for a memorial service today (Thursday) to pay tribute to Warrant Officer Johannes Ngwane (55).

He was viciously attacked by awaiting trial prisoners while conducting his routine afternoon cell inspection.

His family from eNqobokazi in Hluhluwe shared their pain with the Zululand Observer, describing him as a humble, gentle and loving person who cared for his community and family.

Family spokesperson Mduduzi Mbatha, said they are grappling to come to terms with the inhuman act.

‘Mkhulu was a father to many. He taught us many things and we were proud of him.

‘This is not just a loss to the family but to the community because he loved and helped them all the time.

‘We don’t understand how people could commit such an act to this loving soul,’ said Mduduzi.

Devoted to duty

In an alleged attempt to escape, the perpetrators strangled Ngwane with a blanket. He was rushed to hospital where he died.

His colleagues also spoke about the man behind the uniform, saying he will be remembered for his personality and dedication to duty.

‘We used to joke with him, calling him ‘Gwajo’ (‘rabbit’).

‘He was devoted to his work since he came to eSikhawini from uLundi and we are truly saddened by his passing,’ said Lt Thembinkosi Mkhumane.

On Wednesday morning, uThungulu Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba and uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo visited the scene.

They lit a candle in remembrance of his life and burning desire to bring change in communities.

‘This tragedy has affected us all, even the President, and we trust the law to take its course,’ said Mashaba.

The suspects will appear in court on Monday for a formal bail application.
