Community mourns well-known barman

Empangeni Rugby Club barman, Alpheus 'Alfie' Gumede died this morning.

FAMILY and colleagues have expressed shock and sadness following the death of Alpheus ‘Alfie’ Gumede, a well-known and loved barman at the Empangeni Rugby Club.

According to reports, Alfie (44) was returning home in the early hours of Sunday morning when he was struck by a car on Empangeni Main Road.

Sadly, he sustained fatal injuries.

‘There are no words to say,’ said fellow barman, Vela Ngema.

‘He was a very nice person, and very humble. Together we made things happen here at the club.

‘We will always remember him as ‘Slick’ on the pool table and hopefully we will meet each other again one day. We will miss him.’

Alfie worked at the rugby club for more than 29 years. He leaves behind his wife Portia Gumede and their seven-year-old twins.

‘I am going to miss him so much,’ his grieving wife, Portia told the Zululand Observer this morning.

‘I don’t know how I am going to tell my children. If my tears could only build a stairway to heaven, I would bring him back.’
