Police Minister confronts copper theft

Minister Nathi Nhleko visits RBM to tackle growing theft crimes at the mine.

NATIONAL Police Minister Nathi Nhleko on Tuesday visited Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) to gain first-hand knowledge about copper and diesel theft plaguing the local mine.

This followed RBM’s engagement with the Provincial Commissioner earlier this year.

Nhleko did an on site inspection of hot spot crime areas and discussed the growing theft dilemma.

‘Copper theft is economic sabotage and a nationwide concern, so it is important for us to strengthen our collaborative efforts,’ said Nhleko.

‘My team and I are committed to working with RBM and all other corporates in this area.’

He now plans to meet with the Minister of Economic Development and Minister of Justice to discuss the crime issue further.

‘I would like to see the roll-out of these collaborative partnerships across the country.

‘It is important for us to work with the communities to curb crime.’

Nhleko is expected to return to Richards Bay later this year for a three-day outreach programme with RBM’s four host communities – Mbonambi, Mkhwanazi, Sokhulu and Dube.

RBM Managing Director Mpho Mothoa thanked the minister for taking the time to visit RBM.

He emphasised the only way for the company to address the issue of crime in the area is through a collaborative approach iunvolving all relevant stakeholders.

‘Cable theft not only affects our business, but the communities as well,’ said Mothoa.

‘There appears to be an increase of these incidents and the sooner we find a solution the better for all concerned.

‘We look forward to working with SAPS and other stakeholders in this area.’
