UPDATE: Man arrested for shopping centre murder

He appeared in Empangeni District Court on Tuesday, where the case was remanded for bail application.

HIS life ended with his throat slashed open with a broken bottle.

Shortly before 2pm on Sunday afternoon Sihle ‘Charly’ Shandu (30) was stabbed to death at Central Park Shopping Centre in Empangeni.

According to eyewitnesses Shandu and some ‘friends’ had been drinking at their usual spot outside a liquor store when a quarrel broke out between Shandu and another man.

The fight turned nasty when Shandu slapped the man, and the party broke up.

On Sunday, Shandu returned to the shopping centre in an apparent bid to make peace with the friend he had argued with, even buying a six-pack of beer to share.

According to reports, when Shandu returned to the drinking area, the other man was waiting for him around the corner with a broken bottle.

Shandu was stabbed in the arm and slashed across the throat as he tried to run away.

He was declared dead on scene by emergency services.

According to Empangeni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, a 57-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder.

He appeared in Empangeni District Court on Tuesday, where the case was remanded for bail application on May 5.

Shandu is survived by his mother, grandmother, brother and a five-year-old child.
