UPDATE: Chief granted return of firearms

Chief Zungu of KwaMadlebe Tribal Council and Inkosi Eric Khoza were arrested in March this year.

INKOSI Zenzo K Zungu appeared in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, on an application for the return of his four rifles, confiscated during his arrest on 13 March.

Inkosi Zungu of KwaMadlebe Tribal Council and Inkosi Eric Khoza of uThungulu Traditional Council and Nkosinathi Shezi (37) were arrested by members of the National Intervention Unit from Durban, and were each released on R1 000 bail.

The defence argued the weapons confiscated had no bearing in the case they are accused of, since they were not registered for use by his security company (ZKZ Security).

The three are facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and murder, which are said to have been committed in 2006.

The State argued the weapons are still being tested for ballistic evidence to determine whether or not they are working, and whether they were used in committing the crimes the three are accused of.

The State was also intending to ‘keep’ the weapons, in case they are needed as evidence during the trial.

The defence attorney requested the firearms be returned to ZKZ Security within two weeks, and the judge ordered the State to return them on or before 12 May.

The trial was remanded to 30 June, Court B of Empangeni Magistrate’s Court, and the accused are still out on their R1000 bail.
