Poor performance by uThungulu matrics

Only six uThungulu schools achieve 100% matric pass rate.

ONLY six public schools in the uThungulu District can boast a 100% matric pass rates for 2014.

This is according to statistics released by the Department of Education, which named Mthunzini High, St Catherine’s, Vuleka School for the Deaf, Noqandela, Gwejobomvu and Birdsview Academy as the small number of schools having achieved full passes.

St Catherine’s and Vuleka also accomplished the top average in 2013, whereas Mthunzini and Noqandela have made whopping improvements from their previous years’ 49.23% and 62.5% pass rates respectively.

Last year, Birdsview Academy had its first matric class writing the final exams since the school was established in 2010.

‘It is an excellent achievement for us to be one of the few schools to achieve 100% passes – especially since we are such a new school with a first ever Gr 12 class,’ said Birdsview Academy Principal Khumarie Marimuthu.

‘This was our most important goal and I am so proud of our matrics and teachers.’

Overall, KZN recorded the biggest fall in matric pass rates in South Africa.

Last week a disapointed KZN Department of Education vowed to work towards improving matric results this year.

A response from the uThungulu District Department of Education was not received in time for print.
