Cops weed out dagga dealers

Wide-awake security guard alerts cops

THE vigilance of a security guard led police to the recovery of a massive dagga haul at a complex in Brackenham late Sunday afternoon.

The man had been doing door-to-door rounds at the Villa Bugula flats when a child opened a door and the guard spotted a person inside engaged in packaging the dagga.

He alerted his Votella Security Services supervisor and the Richards Bay police were called to the scene.

They were amazed to see the amount of dagga on the premises, in 18 large containers, including plastic bin bags, baths, sacks and big buckets.

While most of the dagga was still in bulk, leaf form, some had already been ‘cleaned’ and was in the process of being packed into smaller parcels.

One container held a heavy mass of dagga ‘dough’.

The dagga was weighed 123.5kg and at a rough calculation of one rand per one gram on the street, the total haul was worth about R123 500.

Police believe the dagga was to be sold on the streets of Richards Bay.

One adult female suspect arrested was said to be a Lesotho national and the dagga is believed to have been brought to Richards Bay from Matatiele in the northern part of the Eastern Cape province.

Meanwhile, concern has been expressed over small children who were reportedly living in the flat where the drugs were recovered, and welfare services have been notified.
