Veldenvlei service station hit by armed gang on two consecutive weekends.

ARMED robbers have hit the Engen service station in Veldenvlei was struck on consecutive weekends.

According to Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, a week after the Engen Richards Bay garage in Weigelia road fell victim to an armed robbery during which suspects fled with cash and cigarettes, the outlet was hit again last Friday night in a similar incident.

The cashier was approached by a gunman and threatened, and robbed of cash and cigarettes while an accomplice kept guard at the door.

Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker warned local businesses to exercise extra caution as the festive season approaches.

‘A concerted effort has been made by the police and the South Africa Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) to sensitise businesses and individuals to be more alert, use drop safes and keep as little cash in the till points as possible.

‘Businesses must take steps to safeguard themselves and reduce the risks,’ he said.
