Gill netter disappears in estuary

The search for the body resumed early yesterday morning.

A SUSPECTED poacher, who was reportedly gill netting in the St Lucia Estuary, mysteriously disappeared on Friday evening.

By Saturday evening, both Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority had confirmed the incident.

The man, thought to be a Mozambican citizen living in Dukuduku, was allegedly poaching from a rudimentary homemade boat about 6km upstream of the St Lucia Estuary Mouth in an area known as ‘The Narrows’.

It is believed his boat was overturned by a hippo at about 6pm on Friday evening.

According to iSimangaliso CEO, Andrew Zaloumis, the SAPS Water Wing conducted a search on Saturday and located a damaged homemade boat. The search for the body resumed early yesterday morning.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Spokesperson, Musa Mntambo confirmed that gill netting was illegal and that the conservation authority had removed kilometres of gill nets in uMlalazi, which will soon be destroyed.
