Military Ombud to participate in Armed Forces Day events in Richards Bay

The Ombud will reach out to stakeholders, explaining the office's mandate

THE South African Military Ombudsman is set to use Armed Forces Day commemorations being held in Richards Bay to educate soldiers and members of the public on their rights and procedures when they need assistance from the office.

This initiative will be led by the Military Ombud’s retired Lt Gen Vusumuzi Masondo with a team of senior managers who will engage with the serving SANDF and members of the public as to the office’s mandate.

The Military Ombud was established in 2012 to investigate and ensure complaints against the SANDF are resolved in a fair, economical, and expeditious manner.

Masondo said the Ombud is entrusted with the responsibility of investigating complaints brought by members of the SANDF who are not satisfied with their conditions of service, and also investigates complaints brought by members of the public against SANDF personnel on their official conduct.

“Armed Forces Day is the best platform for the office to reach out to its target audience. Armed Forces Day events are where we are able to reach most of our key stakeholders of serving SANDF members and members of the public in one place,” said Masondo.

He said they have a responsibility to inform soldiers about an alternative avenue of dispute resolution that they can use once they have exhausted their internal channels of command.

The Ombud investigation is not a criminal investigation but a non-adversarial administrative inquiry to ensure due process has been observed by the employer.
